Pressing

Pressing to death was done over a period of days. A board was placed over the victim's body and weights were piled on top of it. Slow crushing was induced with heavier and heavier iron weights until the naked victim agreed to plea or died.
No food was allowed – "save only on the first day, three morsels of the worst bread, and on the second day, three draughts of standing water".
One report from 1629 says "in pressing, his tongue being pressed from his mouth, the sheriff with his cane forced it in again".
Pressing was an illegal punishment as is was thought of as inhumane.
