you need : large piece of suede, leather or neoprene rubber 7" piece of dowel cord wooden cupboard door handle self-tapping screw, 5mm x 50.8mm also : scissors, staple gun, glue, hacksaw, drill, large eyed needle |
| The flogger will have an 8" handle with 16" strands, each a ½" wide. The number of strands is determined by the thickness of the fabric and the size of hand of the person it is being made for. I have found that this usually varies between 24 and 36 strands.
Mark out the fabric to the above dimensions and assume that you will need the maximum amount of strands. Neatly cut the strands. |

Staple the top 8" edge of the fabric to the dowel rod. Apply glue to the rest of the handle area. Start to roll the handle, keeping it tight and making sure that the top edge is kept even. A third of the way through the rolling process start to test the thickness of the roll. It needs to sit comfortably in the hand. Although cord will be added to the thickness when making the handle this need not be taken into account because the cord is whipped on tightly, compressing the fabric slightly. Depending on the thickness required either continue rolling or cut away the excess fabric. |
|
Take the cord and run the end under the edge seam of the rolled fabric at the base of the handle area. Holding the seam firmly start to whip the cord around the handle, starting at the base and working upwards. Keep the cord under tension while doing this. Make sure each turn fits tight and flush to the last to avoid the cord opening and slipping apart after use. When you reach the top of the handle tie the cord temporarily while you complete the next part of construction. |

Cut the head of the screw using a hacksaw. Drill carefully through the centre of the dowel and twist the screw firmly into place. Drill the hole out in the wooden doorknob to match the thickness of the screw and attach it into place. Screw the knob down onto the end of the flogger. Finish whipping the cord until it meets the knob. Once the whipping is complete loosen the knob. To finish off the whipping thread the ends of the cord back down under the whipped handle and trim off. Put a small amount of glue under the wooden knob and screw it firmly into place. |
